SOME five million students from public elementary and secondary schools have been enlisted along with community leaders in 42,000 barangays in the government’s program of planting 1.5 billion trees.
Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje said the National Greening Program mandates the planting of 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares of denuded and marginal lands from 2011 to 2016.
The tree planting project is a concerted effort among government agencies such as the Departments of Agriculture, Agrarian Reform, Interior and Local Government and Education apart from the DENR, which is tasked by President Benigno Aquino to take the lead in the NGP.
