Occidental Mindoro to build classrooms

The province of Occidental Mindoro may be the first local government unit to lick the perennial problem of classroom shortage in public schools by 2013.

This developed as DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro and Occidental Mindoro Gov. Josephine Ramirez Sato signed a memorandum of agreement recently to build 129 new classrooms through the LGUDepEd counterparting program.

Currently, classroom shortage in the province stands at 256. Luistro said that given the determination of the provincial government to address the classroom shortage, “it is highly possible that the LGU can fully close the gap by 2013 or even earlier. “

DepEd will match in equal amount the funding release of each LGU under the DepEd- LGU Counterparting for Classroom Construction Program. Under the counterparting program, the initial 50 percent of the building cost will come from participating LGUs which give priority to areas experiencing acute shortage.

The counterparting program between the LGU of Occidental Mindoro and DepEd has a total fund of P99.2 million to build 129 new classrooms in the province. The LGU’s share of P50 million will finance the construction of 50 new classrooms on top of DepEd’s program for 2011. It will also subsidize the provision of additional features to the 79 new classrooms on the DepEd’s list. The additional features include a toilet each for each of the 129 classrooms as well as the expansion of the corridors for these school buildings.

Adamson alumna elected head of SSJ congregation

Sister Lillian Ocenar, an Adamson University alumna who graduated in 1979 with a degree in Chemical Engineering, was recently elected general coordinator (formerly called Superior General) of her congregation, the Siervas de San Jose (SSJ).

She assumed her post on June 6, 2011. Before being elected to the highest post in the congregation, she worked as provincial treasurer for six years, provincial superior for nine years and was a member of the general team for six years as well. Siervas de San Jose (Spanish for “Servants of St. Joseph”) is an international religious congregation of the Roman Catholic Church. It was founded on January 7, 1874 by Francisco Butinyà, S.J. and Bonifacia Rodríguez Castro, in Salamanca, Spain and approved by Leo XIII on July 1, 1901. The SSJ has communities in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Cuba, Congo, Spain, Italy, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and Vietnam.

Sr. Lillian did not have the chance to practice her profession as she joined the Siervas in 1979, right after graduation from college. In 2007, Sr. Lillian was recognized by her alma mater as one of 75 Outstanding Adamsonians during the Diamond Jubilee celebration.
