Pasay Launches Anti-Littering, Green Drive

The “Green and Clean, Anti-Littering” campaign of Pasay City is gaining support from the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), barangay officials and action officers, civic groups, professionals, educators, police, youth and students.

Mayor Antonino G. Calixto led the launching of the campaign at the Cuneta Astrodome last June 15, 2011. He said he is honored that “Pasay ko, Love ko! Aasenso sa Green and Clean, Anti-Littering Campaign” has become a part of MMDA’s anti-littering drive, declaring a strong commitment that “anti-littering is a top priority-for sanitation, health and environment of the people of Pasay.”

The environmental protection program is part of Calixto’s program to make Pasay the next “Travel City of the Philippines.”

He thanked the residents, MMDA and Metro Manila Mayors’ Spouses Foundation, Inc. (MMMSFI) and other groups. The MMMSFI is headed by Edna Aguas-Calixto, foundation president, and wife of the city mayor, who is active in community development and civic projects.

Rep. Imelda “Emi” G. Calixto-Rubiano of the city’s lone congressional district, and younger sister of the mayor, joined the event, advocating “love and commitment” for a “clean and green city.”

“If we do our share in the anti-littering campaign, we will lessen the incidence of flooding, save more lives and properties, and be free from diseases. It will generate savings for government, as the funds for flood control could be used for other activities,” she said.

There are 201 barangays in the city. Pasay City Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president Antonia Carballo-Cuneta led barangay officials in supporting the city’s environmental and tourism projects, while the Kabataang Barangay also contributes efforts for the undertaking’s success.

Greenpeace International represented by Nhel Rondejas and Francis de la Cruz was in attendance. Supt. Estrellita Putian, Pasay City schools’ division head, led principals and teachers from the city’s various schools in joining the event, with students from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay and Pasay City West High, department heads of city government, and members of non-government organizations, including Inaanak Foundation and JCI Perlas Pasay.
