A solution to the perennial garbage woes in the country will probably be solved with the establishment of a US$500-million pilot project plant in Orion, Bataan.
Mayor Jose “Pepe” Santos of Orion town, Bataan said that this is the first time that a state–of-the-art waste facility will be built in his town even as he said that the garbage problem in Bataan can now be solved with the putting up of the plant.
“We accepted the garbage facility to be put up in my town since this is a new technology, no air and water pollution,” Santos said, during the ground-breaking of the project last Sunday.
Engr. Jose Utrillo, president and chief executive officer of the Concord Pacific Investment Holdings, Inc., funder of the project, said that this is their pilot project in the country as he expressed optimism that the garbage problem which he described as alarming will finally be solved. “This will mark the end of the garbage problem in our country.” He added that they are willing to put up more such projects in the countryside.
A businessman based in US, Engr. Utrillo also said that the garbage plant will also actually produce electricity in what he described as “from waste to energy” project. “In every 200 metric tons of garbage, the power plant will produce 12.8 megawatt of electricity,” said Utrillo.
Mayor Santos said that the long time problem in addressing the waste problem in the province can now be solved, stressing that they are willing to absolve the garbage in other towns since the project was designed for it. “The putting up of the project was timely since it came at a time when the Department of Environment and Natural Resources had already issued a closure orders to all open dump site in the province and nearby areas.”
This was confirmed by Bonifacio Arce, chief of the Provincial Environment Management Office of DENR, citing the probition of R.A. 9003.
