Nothing is Wasted in Cavite Piggery

Hog-raiser Cavite Pig City Inc. is expanding its biogas power system – using pig manure as feedstock – in step with an increase in stock from 64,000 to 100,000 head.

Cavite Pig City will be investing P77.77 million to increase up to 1.1 megawatts the output of the 560 kilowatt biogas waste-to-power system which has been in place since 2009.

The project qualified for registration under the Renewable Energy Act but the BOI said it would not be entitled to income tax holidays since the power to be generated would be for its own use.

The RE law, however, allows it to import capital equipment duty-free 10 years from date of registration.

Pig waste produces methane. According to the company, the volume of manure per hog is 2 kilograms per day which can generate 0.13 cubic centimeters to 0.34 cc methane gas.

As a waste-to-energy project, the biogas system reduces carbon emission and thus can qualify for carbon credits.

It can also be considered as a project under the clean development mechanism and can secure certification of emission reduction.

Cavite Pig City is owned by the Ngo family.
