Dr. John Wecker, director for Vaccine Access and Delivery of the Washington-based Path, said the inclusion of rota virus vaccination in the Department of Health’s (DOH) Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) is a “good decision for the children of the Philippines.”

“The decision to introduce rota virus vaccines requires first very clear evidence and that evidence is that we know the vaccines work and we know these will prevent terrible disease,” said Wecker in a press briefing on the sidelines of the 13th Asian Conference on Diarrheal Diseases and Nutrition here.

During the conference, DOH Secretary Enrique Ona launched the rota virus vaccination campaign that will initially benefit some 700,000 newborns from the 5.2 million families identified as “poorest of the poor” by the Department of Social Welfare and Development under its National Household Targeting System (NHTS).

“The Philippines, recognizing the magnitude of the diarrhea problem, is introducing the rota virus vaccine. P600 million has been allotted for the procurement of the vaccines… We are looking forward to significant gains from this move,” Ona said.

Rota virus is the virus that causes severe diarrhea and vomiting among children below five years old. It is the second leading killer of under-five Filipino children, accounting for 3,500 deaths annually.

Dr. Tony Nelson, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a member of Asian Rotavirus Surveillance Network, said the Philippines stands to set a precedent for its neighboring countries.

“My biggest disappointment is that in Asia we have the best data available and yet in Latin America, the rota virus vaccines were introduced five years ago. The Philippines is the first country to use these data (in Asia). This is a great day for the Philippines and for Asia because many countries will follow through,” Nelson said.

According to Ona, the DOH will start the campaign by vaccinating infants from the NHTS families who will be born from April 2012 to April 2013.

He said the DOH has a list of these families and that it will tap community health workers to reach out to them.

To acquire the vaccines, the DOH will call for a bidding among vaccine manufacturers. So far, only pharmaceutical companies Merck Sharp and Dohme (MSD) and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) are producing the vaccines.

The MSD vaccine is comprised of three doses while the GSK’s is two doses, but it will cost the DOH some P900 per child for any of the two brands. The vaccines must be initially administered among newborns six to 12 weeks after birth while the succeeding dose is given after four weeks.

“It is undeniable that special attention must be given to the health of our children, particularly because many of them are continuously and needlessly suffering from diseases that are either preventable or treatable. Diarrhea falls among these diseases,” Ona said.

He added that if the rota virus cases will be reduced, if not eradicated, this will contribute to the “reduction of under-five mortality” as targeted under the Millennium Development Goals.

Binay in his speech, during last Tuesday’s inauguration of the facility, cited the City of Manila for leading the use of renewable energy (RE) sources among local governments in the country.

“Aaminin ko, may kahalong inggit ang pagkatuwa ko sa pagka-’high-tech’ ng inyong session hall. Sana may ganito ring teknolohiya ang palasyo sa tabing dagat na nagsisilbing opisina namin, ang Coconut Palace (I’ll have to admit that I feel glad and envious at the same time of your session hall with its ‘high-tech’ features. I wish we also have such technology in the palace by the seashore which serves as our office),” Binay said referring to his official residence, the Coconut Palace in Pasay City.

Binay said it was just proper for the City of Manila as the country’s capital to lead the use of RE in government facilities n the Philippines.

“Nararapat lamang na manguna ang kabisera ng bansang Filipinas sa pagpapalaganap ng magagandang halimbawa upang sundan ng iba pang lunsod at bayan sa kapuluan (It’s just right that the capital of the Philippines lead the way in propagating the use of RE in the country to set an example for other cities and town in the archipelago),” he added.

He stressed how pressing the need for the use of RE with the depletion of fossil fuels.

“Napapanahon din ang maituturing nating “test implementation” upang tukuyin kung maaring palaganapin ng malakihan ang paggamit ng lakas ng araw (This should become a ‘test implementation’ of the viability of using solar power in the country),” he said.

The Vice President also lauded the huge savings the City of Manila can have from using solar power. Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno reportedly said that the city council’s monthly electric bill could be cut from P80,000 to P8,000 by using such technology.

The savings, Binay pointed out, could be used instead to fund social services.

Speaking before the Rotary Club of Makati, Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay acknowledged the role of the private sector as a “partner in development towards a safer, healthier, greener and world-class Makati.”

“Makati has undeniably become a role model for other local government units in many facets of governance. This time, we are determined to set the trend and be a compelling force that will spur concerted efforts towards disaster preparedness and resiliency throughout the nation,” Binay said.

He said the city will tap experts from the private sector for its plan to retrofit the 25-story City Hall and make it a “green building.”

The program will be extended to other public buildings such as schools, barangay halls, health centers and hospitals.

The city government and the private sector are currently working on an ordinance called the Makati Green Code that will reward all public and private buildings that will use green technology, Binay said.

Meanwhile, the construction of a new full-service eight-storey Ospital ng Makati that incorporates green features will begin in District I.

The 300-bed hospital will have modern facilities, including six major and minor operating rooms, emergency room with trauma center, a blood bank and a cancer institute.

By the second quarter of this year, Makati’s own milk bank is expected to open after the city government consulted with experts and the Department of Health (DoH) on standards to be followed.

Through a partnership between the city government and SM Development Corporation (SMDC), the sidewalks along Kalayaan, Metropolitan and South Avenues and Nicanor Garcia St. will be improved and beautified with elevated walkways, terracotta block and cobblestone sidewalks, LED lampposts, among other features.

1. LTE. Whilst not entirely a new technology for 2012 (it is so 2011!), but expect the two local companies, Globe and Smart, battling each other in offering this service to the public. They have shown what the technology can do in the summer of 2011, but both are slowly rolling out the tech. Personally, I am testing Smart’s LTE service and it shows a lot of promise (where can you get 60+Mbps of download speed?). However, pricing is still not available (I guess the telcos are both playing the waiting game until they are confident enough that their infra can handle it) and coverage is very limited.

2. Android. The Android juggernaut continues its stride and gets more marketshare. Whilst it eats up a small portion of the iOS market, Android is more positioned to affect the shares of RIM’s Blackberry, Microsoft’s Windows Phone and the feature phones. In addition, 2012 will usher to a Google sanctioned (and co-designed) tablet. Rumored to take on Apple’s iPad, but I believe that it will take on Amazon’s Kindle Fire more.

However, I am *still* pessimistic about how fast OS updates trickle to non-Nexus phones, if it even trickles at all. I also expect the overall user experience on this platform to improve, not due to an overhaul of its underlying OS design, but because of the faster and better underlying hardware (quad core!).

3. Mobile Messaging. SMS-based mobile messaging will continue to be the primary messaging platform for the masses. However, non-telco controlled messaging system will continue to threaten it. iMessage, Facebook Messenger, Google+ Message and WhatsApp, among others, will replace the text-only SMS. Smart’s SmartNet service won’t help SMS either (rather it fast tracks SMS’s death) — imagine being able to send Facebook and Twitter messages for free!

Yes, telcos have their unlimited SMS services — but consider this, sending SMS to your family and friends overseas is not included. You say RIM’s BBM? Well, like iMessage, it is not cross-platform!

4. TV. ABS-CBN pioneered, AFAIK, internet-based live TV in the country with its IWanTV service. I am sure that the other TV networks are cooking up their own. 2012 will be witness to the start of cable-cutting possibilities (if you haven’t done so yet!). Streaming will be more prevalent — YouTube Live, Bloomberg TV, iwantv are just the start. I just hope that they start realizing that Flash is a dying technology — use HTML5 or develop apps for iOS and Android.

5. Tablets. The market for netbooks is rapidly being eaten away by smartphones and tablets and this trend applies in the country as well. With the likes of Apple and Samsung offering both high-end and affordable tablets, and not to forget the home-grown Cherry Mobile tablets and Ionics tablets, more Filipinos will be using tablets to access online services.

Whilst PC manufacturers bank on ultra-books to be the next segment of computing after the netbooks, tablets will still be more popular as tablet processors going dual/quad-core, mobile OS getting more advanced and online services optimized for mobile platforms, desktop OS on ultra-books will no longer be the norm. 2012 will show us this trend.

The Chinese are credited with having cultivated the mushrooms systematically for thousands of years, drying most of the harvest for consumption during harsh vegetable-starved winters. The Japanese value the matsutake, harvested from pine forests and sold for prices rivaling the world-famous black truffles cherished by French chefs but which, technically is not supposed to be a mushroom.

The prices paid for matsutake mushrooms vary according to origin and shape. The association of matsutake with pine trees, the Japanese symbol of longevity, has created a close connection with their cultural identity, which is probably a significant reason for matsutake being the world’s most expensive mushroom, retailing at up to US$2,000.00 per kilo. Although many attempts have been made for the cultivation of matsutake, none to date have been commercially successful. Although methods have been developed for increasing matsutake yields from forests where it occurs naturally, methods for its cultivation remain elusive.

The most popular variety in the whole world is the white button mushroom, with a rounded cap and edible stem. In temperate countries it is grown in caves which provide the perfect temperature and humidity. In the Philippines, fresh button mushrooms used to be very rare, and chefs had to resort to mushrooms canned in brine.

Although city-bred Pinoys still consider mushrooms a foreign ingredient for expensive dishes, barrio residents all over the Philippines have been feasting on mushrooms (kabute in Tagalog) since time immemorial. The most common Philippine mushroom is the Kabuteng Saging (Rice Straw Mushrooms) which sprouts around the base of banana plant clumps after a thunderstorm.

These days, though, the most widely available is the oyster mushroom, sometimes called abalone mushroom, which started to appear in the local market three decades ago.

Travelers to Tagaytay and Batangas are very familiar with the first Mushroom Burger store right on the national highway along the ridge overlooking Taal Volcano, a few kilometers west of the Mendez junction. Thirty years ago, it was a regular stop for our large family during weekend forays to Batangas; all of our five kids (ages 4-10) would not stop screaming until each got a large-size mushroom burger with cheese.

Behind the burger joint, at the edge of the cliff that provided a magnificent view of Taal Lake and Volcano, were five long and tall greenhouses where the oyster mushrooms were grown by the agri-corporation called Biofoods. We often peeked as the gardener on duty picked a kilo of mushrooms for us to take home.

One day, the burger restaurant and take-out stand put on display what it called a Starter Kit, a portable greenhouse for growing mushrooms indoors, in the comfort of one’s home. Basically, it was a wooden box 18 inches wide, 13 inches high and 13 inches deep, with one side open, protected by a lift-up transparent plastic cover.

To start the mushroom garden, there were a dozen plastic bags filled with growing medium and mushroom spores. A small pamphlet explained the simple watering (with a sprayer) and harvesting (twist the clump and pull out) instructions. The whole kit and caboodle cost only P200, or roughly $14 at the time.

As instructed, we placed the box in the most humid area in our flat (the bathroom) by anchoring two metal braces to the wall to hold the mini-garden in place. The kids took turns spraying water after lifting the plastic cover. The cover, when in place, maintained the right heat and humidity levels.

The mini garden was so productive we had to give a lot of mushrooms away to friends and neighbors. After several months, the growing material and spores were finally spent and we emptied the plastic bags into flower pots to enrich the soil.

Spoiled by a constant supply of freshly-harvested mushrooms with our meals, we returned to the Mushroom Burger farm and bought a dozen ready-to-grow oyster mushroom bags, which were then only P7 a piece. Our kids grew up, got married and left home. But I never threw out the mushroom starter kit box, which now serves as bathroom stock box for tissue paper rolls, soap, detergent, cleansers, shampoo and conditioners.

I remembered our mushroom garden last month when a nature-loving neighbor’s unique Christmas gift turned out to be a large bag of medium and large oyster mushrooms growing out of a hole on one side. Unfortunately, the bag had dried out (probably from being displayed too long without upkeep) and no amount of soaking and spraying could coax the spores to come back to life.

We have emailed the supplier, Ministry of Mushrooms {ministryofmushrooms@gmail.com), and also sent text (0917-5006874) to make arrangements for a dozen bags to re-start my 30-year-old mushroom garden.

Found out that each fruiting bag is P175, delivered free anywhere within Metro Manila on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The bags are also sold at the Salcedo Market every Saturday.

The Pearl Oyster Mushrooms harvested from the bag are much larger and have thicker flesh than the kind sold in 100-gram styropacks in supermarkets and upscale vegetable markets. The Lipa-based organic farmers also sell fresh mushrooms at P300 per kilo, delivered with a new recipe every week.

As a cook and gourmand, I thank the enterprising trio of Marco Lobregat, Jose Javier and Nano Sala for giving everyone a chance to experience the awe and joy of growing our own food.

The proponent is the King Ranch in Rosario, Batangas which has a 24-hectare breeding farm in the province and another confinement area in Magalang, Pampanga. It is owned and managed by the father-and-son tandem of Alex Carlos and his son King.

The investment offer comes in three packages that are considered investment-friendly because the investor only pays a down payment of 25 percent and the rest is payable in monthly installments in two years.

The animals are purebred so they are quite expensive, and they are two years old when they are turned over to the owner. By that time, they are ready for breeding and would already give birth to their calves before they are fully paid.

Package I consists of one purebred Brahman bull and three females with a total cost of P280,000. The investor will only give a down payment of P70,000 and pay P8,750 monthly for two years.

Package II costs P420,000 and the animals consist of one bull and five females, and the down payment is P105,000. The monthly installment is P13,125. Package III, on the other hand, consists of one bull and 10 females. Total cost is P770,000 and the down payment is P192,500. Monthly installment is P24,062.50.

Kin Carlos says that the ROI in this kind of investment is 86 percent which is better than putting one’s money in the bank. Along with the investment package, King Ranch will provide the basic information (i.e., supplier of vaccines, medicines and equipment) as well as free training or consultation that the investor needs.

The investors will be the ones to choose what initials should be branded on the cattle that they choose. The brand will serve as cattle identification for the investor’s reference. The management will take care of the animals until they are two years old. It includes feeding, maintenance, medication and vaccines. Beyond two years, the investor will have to pay for the lodging of their animals.

Carlos says that there are income opportunities in raising purebred Brahman. The bull can be used to service the insemination requirements of other raisers. One successful insemination is worth P800 to P1000. The investor may also opt to sell the male calves which could command as much as P35,000 for yearlings (8 months old). The females could be retained for future breeding. They could be bred as early as 18 months old. With proper nutrition, they could produce a calf each year.

Carlos says that Brahmans are not susceptible or prone to fatal diseases. In the seven years of their farm experience, King Ranch has never recorded a mature cattle that died of disease. Brahmans, he said, are hardy and have strong immune system.

Brahmans also have the advantage of having a big size compared to the native cows. A mature Brahman may weigh 750 to 850 kilos compared to the 250 to 300 kilos of the native strain.

Brahmans are docile animals and they require low maintenance. They only need forage (grass, hay) and protein source that may be available in the area. They can be raised in confinement or under the grazing system. King Carlos can be reached at ark.carlos@yahoo.com.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources said Metro Manila produced about 8,400 to 8,600 tons of trash per day.

Bosco Verticale is Italian for “Vertical Forest.” The project took inspiration from traditional Italian towers covered in ivy. Boeri has simply multiplied the amount of foliage to a dramatic degree, envisioning residential buildings that resemble tall boxy trees. Each apartment unit has a balcony attached, with a lush garden enveloping the structure. The two towers will provide roots for 900 trees, as well as plenty of shrubbery and other floral vegetation. Their footprint, when flattened, is equal to 10,000 square meters of forest. Bosco Verticale provides a plan to make reforestation possible within the confines of a developed city.

Though Harvard Design Magazine called the project “dreamily utopian,” this tower is no fantasy. Boeri posted photos of the towers’ construction on his blog last month. Take a look for yourself:

There’s lots of science behind the project to prove that it’ll actually improve the city atmosphere, and not just the skyline. Boeri’s materials state:

The diversity of the plants and their characteristics produce humidity, absorb carbon dioxide and dust particles, producing oxygen and protect from radiation and acoustic pollution, improving the quality of living spaces and saving energy. Plant irrigation will be produced to great extent through the filtering and reuse of the grey waters produced by the building. Additionally Aeolian and photovoltaic energy systems will contribute, together with the aforementioned microclimate to increase the degree of energetic self sufficiency of the two towers.

The presence of this vegetation will also encourage the presence of birds and insects within the miniature gardens. Bosco Verticale intends to balance out the city’s environmental damage, and to create a self-sufficient ecosystem. And with construction costing only five percent higher than that of a typical skyscraper, the concept of a vertical skyscraper is incredibly accessible for other cities facing similar plights.

Well, that might be true. But there are people who are employed but who would like to do their own brand of farming for their own good reasons. They might want to make additional income to meet the increasing needs of the family. Some may be interested in hobby farming to break the monotony of office work. There may be some other good reasons.

Anyway, there are strategies one can take in order to succeed even if one cannot devote his full time to his farming or gardening project. After all, there are a wide variety of agricultural projects that one can engage in. Some very doable, some not so.

Of course, one favorite project is growing high-value vegetables. Just like what Rose Imperial is doing while she is employed with the Department of Agriculture as the Regional Coordinator of the High Value Crops Development Project in Bicol region.

For the last three years, she said, she has been growing selected vegetables not just for home use but for sale to the commercial market. Her most recent crops were ampalaya, eggplant and tomato which she grew on 1,500 square meters near where she lives in Naga City.

She is a member of a group of about 20 similarly inclined farmers who grow vegetables and who sell their produce as a group to SM supermarket as well as to the traditional markets in town. She has been planting hybrid seeds from East-West Seed Company like the Casino eggplant, D-Max tomato and Galaxy ampalaya. However, she will be trying soon the new varieties she saw at the Ramgo Field Derby in Polomolok, South Cotabato. She was one of the invitees to the Ramgo Research Station where the seed company’s latest varieties are showcased with their excellent performance.

The beauty about growing vegetables in hobby farming is that they have a short gestation period. For instance, the new cucumber varieties could be harvested in just 30 to 35 days from planting the seeds. Cucumber is increasingly in demand because it is claimed to be good for the health, and the price is not bad.

One objective of not a few hobby farmers is to produce vegetables for their own consumption. That’s one way of ensuring that the vegetables they eat are not sprayed with poison.

Many hobby farmers are now learning to grow their vegetables the organic way. They themselves can produce the organic fertilizer they use by culturing earthworms. Or they can use fermented plant or fruit juices to promote the growth of their plants as well as to protect them from insect pests.

Some hobby farmers don’t only enjoy growing their plants. They also enjoy selling their harvest in weekend markets. We used to see a couple, a Belgian and his Filipino wife, selling their organic vegetables at the AANI weekend market at the FTI. Their vegetables were usually sold before noontime because they had developed their faithful buyers who regularly buy their needs from them.

Of course, the hobby farmer does not have to do all the dirty work in the farm or garden. There are available help who could do the planting, cultivating, harvesting and the like. At any rate, the hobby farmer would also like to do some of the chores as a form of exercise, and so he can brag to his friends that he or she is a hands-on hobby farmer.

The good thing about this business of hobby farming is that there are many inputs that are available. If you are not keen on germinating your own seeds, you can buy the ready-to-plant seedlings from companies like the East-West Seed Company.

There are different strategies in hobby farming. Instead of growing the new hybrids, one can specialize in the indigenous vegetables. These include the Bago tree whose young leaves are used in cooking fish pinangat. Or the Batuan for cooking a soupy dishcalled kansi that is a specialty in western Visayas.

One can also produce something not usually available. One fellow was telling us that someone in Bulacan is making money by planting several dwarf tamarind trees where he harvests the young leaves for sale in the market. The young leaves are used in “sinampalokang manok” and other dishes.
